"November Cornfield"
20th Annual Winter Members Show:
Southern Vermont Art Center, Jan. 14 - Feb. 14, 2012
My recently competed painting "November Cornfield" was included in the SVAC Winter Members Show. The painting is based on a photo I took during our recent visit to Vermont (November, 2011), in Chester. We were returning from a visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS), in Quechee to our accomodations at Mt. Snow. I was struck by the pattern of the cornstalk stubble left after the field was mowed at the end of the season. The rapidly-changing light of the wind-blown partly cloudy sky added an interesting element to the scene.

"Gone to Seed"
55th National Fall Open Exhibition:
October 1 - November 13, 2011
Two of my paintings - Baltimore Clipper and Gone to Seed - were accepted into the 55th National Fall Open Exhibition at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester, Vermont.
Baltimore Clipper
Developed from the series of photos I took at the July 1, 2007 Parade of Tall Ships in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, this painting depicts the Pride of Baltimore II - a two-masted topsail schooner. Baltimore clippers are known for their narrow beam and rakish masts. Their speed and maneuverability were a big factor in our victory over England in the War of 1812, but they were impractical as cargo ships, so they faded into obsolescence soon after the war. This ship was built in the late 1980's to replace its predecessor which was lost in a tragic shipwreck in 1986.
Gone to Seed
These forlorn trucks were part of a group of about ten that we came across on the side of the highway during our travels. They appear to be abandoned military trucks, lined up like the front line of an advancing army. The flowers, grass, and young trees growing up through them gave the scene an ironic twist and inspired the title.

Impressions of New England:
Aug. 13 - Dec. 18, 2011
I'm extremely pleased to have had two paintings accepted into the Impressions of New England show at the Bennington Center for the Arts. The paintings are Day's End, Hog Island Maine and Rockport Harbour.
"Day's End, Hog Island Maine"
Day's End, Hog Island Maine
Hog Island has been home to an Audubon Society camp since the 1930s. It's located in Muscongus Bay - the same bay as Eastern Egg Rock, the site of the first experiment in reintroducing Atlantic Puffins to an extirpated colony. I had the good fortune to spend a glorious late afternoon and evening there at the invitation of Steve Kress, the founder of Project Puffin. This painting came out of that visit. I tried to capture the warmth and texture of the old wood, bathed in late afternoon sunlight.
"Rockport Harbour"
Rockport Harbour
This building and the stone jetty on which it sits have been painted so many times, the scene has earned the name of "Motif No. 1." I tried to present the well-known view from a different perspective. I love the earthy colors of the moss and stone, juxtaposed against the bright buildings and bouys. The sailboat was a serendipitous bonus. The fortunate syncrony of tide, atmosphere, and man-made elements combine to give the painting a timeless quality.
