Representational watercolor paintings

by New England painter, Steve Hamlin

Merritt Island Osprey

"Merritt Island Osprey"

Originals, limited edition prints and notecards.

I paint with materials that I expect will long outlive me and my prints are made using paper and ink that should rival the original. Currently, I paint on 140 lb. Arches paper, with professional-grade paints, mostly Winsor & Newton. I create my prints using Epson archival inks and 140 lb. watercolor paper (either Lanaquarelle or Arches- both cold-pressed, mould-made papers of the highest quality). I mat my work with double archival ragmats from Crescent.

Artist's Bridge, Newry Maine

"Artist's Bridge, Newry Maine"

After a twenty year lapse, I got inspired to begin painting again a couple of years ago (2007). I pulled out my old easel, my brushes (some of which I've had since I took my first watercolor class at the age of thirteen, nearly forty years ago), and my paints and paper. My first painting was a little tentative, but I think it's still quite successful. It's titled "Covered Bridge, Stark New Hampshire", and it's available for viewing (and purchase) here.

Once I finished "Stark New Hampshire", I began immediately on a second painting ("Snowy Morning, Perkin's Cove Maine") which presented me with some different challenges. I realized that I had really missed painting - I was having fun! Since those first efforts, I've been painting steadily. My technique has matured (along with me) and I think I'm painting better than I ever did. Thanks to the traveling that my wife and I have been fortunate to do, and to our passion for photography, I have a wealth of material to draw from.

My site is organized with two categories of my paintings: "Recent Work" and "Gallery". The "Recent Work" gallery contains a small selection of my newest paintings, while the "Gallery" page includes all of my available work in roughly reverse chronological order of creation.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I've enjoyed creating it. Thanks for looking and feel free to contact me.

*A note about color rendition - the colors that appear on your monitor are dependent on many factors that are beyond my control. Please be aware that there may be variation between screen renditions and actual paintings or prints. To insure that you will be satisfied with your art purchase, you may want to buy a notecard of the painting first. The notecard will be a more reliable representation of the painting than most computer monitors.
